Batteries power our lives but can harm the environment if not disposed of properly. Our battery recycling service recycles over 20 subtypes of domestic, commercial and industrial batteries. From household batteries to industrial units, we ensure safe and efficient processing.
We hold multiple international permits to export hazardous waste, valid until 2026, which have been verified with the Environmental Protection Authority NZ, in accordance with the Basel Convention.

Lithium Primary Embedded Batteries
We recycle non-rechargeable batteries embedded in items such as personal locator beacons, smoke alarms, vapes, thermometers, and defibrillators.
Lithium-Ion Embedded Batteries
Rechargeable batteries embedded in items like headphones, laptops, mobile phones, toothbrushes, power banks, and vapes are efficiently processed and recycled.

You can drop off your lead acid, alkaline, nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride hybrid and nickel metal hydride dry cell batteries at all our locations nationwide. All other types of batteries can be accepted at our Takanini (Auckland) and all our South Island locations. We are working to expand this service to our other branches. If you're outside these locations and need to know where to recycle your batteries, please contact our friendly team using the details provided above.

We pay you for lead acid batteries and nickel metal hydride hybrid batteries but currently charge for recycling other battery types based on their chemistry and weight. We accept nickel metal hydride dry cell batteries for free. Lithium batteries can be accepted at our Takanini (Auckland) and all our South Island locations for a fee with the exception of Invercargill where the public (not businesses) can drop off household batteries under 5kgs for free due to an arrangement with Invercargill City Council. If you bring in metal for recycling at the same time, it can help offset the battery recycling fee.

Currently we cannot accept damaged Lithium batteries. We understand that this is a growing concern. Advice will be published soon regarding how to handle and dispose of them.

Ensure batteries, including coin/ button batteries, are taped or individually bagged prior to storing. Household Sellotape is fine for taping. Do not store batteries with flammable or conductive materials like metal, paper clips, staples, etc.

Separating batteries by chemistry is beneficial, but it is not necessary. However, each battery must be individually packaged to prevent short-circuiting. You can do this by using the original retail packages, an individual plastic bag, or by taping over the exposed terminals. For small batteries, e.g., AA or AAA, up to 10x batteries packed together in a bag are fine. Zip-lock bags are great for this purpose. Our end users recycle these soft plastic bags.

At Phoenix Recycling, we handle the batteries with utmost care and ensure they are shipped under hazardous waste permits to our approved recycling facilities offshore. These facilities are equipped to safely process and recycle the batteries, recovering valuable materials and minimising environmental impact. The recycling process includes breaking down the batteries, extracting reusable components, and properly disposing of any hazardous materials.
