What is
ZINC?
Zinc, primarily extracted from zinc ore (sphalerite), is a lightweight, corrosion-resistant metal used to strengthen and protect other metals. It’s best known for its role in galvanising steel, a process that coats steel with a layer of zinc to prevent rust and extend its lifespan. Zinc is also commonly used in die-casting, electronics, and construction due to its strength, versatility, and resistance to wear.
One of zinc’s biggest benefits? It’s 100% recyclable and can be reused indefinitely without losing its quality. Producing zinc from raw ore uses 75% more energy than recycling, which is why keeping it in circulation is so important.
TYPES OF
ZINC scrap metal
WE ACCEPT
While not all that common, we recycle a few varieties of zinc scrap metal. Here’s what we’re looking for:
DIE CAST
ZINC
Zinc Die Cast comes in solid pieces made during die casting processes. It’s often found in things like automotive parts, tools, or industrial components. If you’ve got leftover zinc from manufacturing or construction, bring it in – it’s perfect for recycling. Zinc Die Cast is highly recyclable, meaning it can be repurposed into new materials with minimal waste.
If you’ve got Zinc Die Cast scrap, we make it simple to bring in and recycle, giving it a new life. Not sure if your scrap qualifies? No problem! Just drop by to one of our recycling centres, and we’ll help you figure it out.
ZINC
SHEETS
Zinc Sheets are commonly used in architectural cladding, roofing, gutters, and signage. These flat or rolled sheets are lightweight, corrosion- resistant, and easy to recycle when they reach the end of their use.
Whether you’re replacing a roof or clearing out sheet offcuts from a fabrication job, we accept clean zinc sheets for recycling. They’re a valuable resource that can be melted down and reused with minimal environmental impact.
ZINC
SPRAY
Zinc Spray (also known as thermal spray zinc) is often used for anti-corrosion coating in industrial applications, such as pipelines, marine equipment, or structural steel. Residual zinc from spray systems, overspray collection, or clean-up processes can still be recycled.
If your workshop or project generates excess zinc spray residue, don’t bin it, bring it in. We’ll make sure it gets properly processed and put back to good use.
WHy is ZINC
so useful?
Zinc is a versatile and widely used metal essential in construction, manufacturing, and corrosion protection. Its unique properties make it a key material in modern industries, helping to extend the lifespan of steel, improve product durability, and reduce environmental impact.
Highly corrosion-resistant:
Zinc forms a natural protective layer that prevents rust, making it ideal for galvanising steel, a process that coats steel with zinc to protect buildings, vehicles, and infrastructure from corrosion. This resistance is why over 50% of zinc produced worldwide is used in galvanising.Strong yet malleable:
Zinc is tough and impact-resistant yet easy to shape and cast, making it perfect for die-casting processes used in automotive, electronics, and tool manufacturing.Essential for coatings & alloys:
Zinc is commonly used in metal plating and alloys, such as brass (a mix of copper and zinc). These alloys are widely used in plumbing, decorative fittings, and electrical components.Used in energy storage & electronics:
Zinc is a key material in batteries, electrical components, and industrial coatings. Zinc-based batteries, such as zinc-carbon and zinc-air batteries, are widely used in portable electronics and hearing aids.Sustainable & recyclable:
Zinc can be recycled indefinitely without losing its properties. Since producing new zinc from ore takes significantly more energy than recycling, keeping zinc in circulation reduces mining demand, saves resources, and lowers emissions.
WHY
RECYCLE ZINC?
Zinc is one of the most essential metals in industrial and everyday applications. It’s known for its strength and resistance to corrosion, making it a key material in construction, manufacturing, and coatings. Recycling zinc is vital, and here’s why:
Minimise waste:
Zinc doesn’t decompose in landfills. Recycling keeps it in use and prevents unnecessary waste.Conserve natural resources:
Mining zinc takes a lot of energy and disrupts ecosystems. Recycling reduces the demand for mining and keeps the metal in circulation.Lower energy use:
Producing new zinc from raw ore requires significantly more energy than recycling. By recycling, you’re saving energy and reducing emissions.Support sustainable manufacturing:
Recycled zinc is used in numerous industries, from creating new products to galvanising metals for corrosion protection.
